Río Douro: Port Country

The Douro River runs the width of northern Portugal, spilling out into the Atlantic Ocean. Grapes grown along the river are aged in port houses throughout the country, a small mountain of which sits on the edge of the Douro in Porto. Visitors flood the counters for a taste of port aged for decades or perhaps a fizzy porto tónico. Driving east along the river, though, gives way to villages stacked along the Rota do Românico. In this narrow, vineyard-lined route, the full scale of the Douro Valley's rich soil and heritage are on display.
